Dr. Mercado painted this painting during his recent trip to Spain. The painting is titled, “Frida 2007”, after the great Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo. Frida was an iconoclastic painter who had a great lust for life. Her body of work consists of 55 paintings, one third of them were self-portraits. She had a great love for animals including a pet spider monkey that she used in one of her most famous paintings, “Self Portrait with Monkey” (1938 oil on Masonite).
In order to recreate the feeling of Kahlo’s painting, Dr. Mercado first photographed a model, then he created a pencil sketch, incorporating some of the most important elements of the original. Next, he transferred the finished drawing to a canvas (he did this in Spain) and then rendered the painting in rich oil colors.
